Carroll Mathis Death, Obituary – On Sunday, August 20, 2023, Shirley Lorraine Carroll Mathis, aged 87, passed away peacefully at her home. Born on April 6, 1936, in Cotton Plant, MS, she was the daughter of the late Herman Brandon Carroll and Pauline Sanders Carroll. Shirley’s life was marked by various roles and contributions that endeared her to her community.
She was a devoted homemaker, renowned for her exquisite handiwork. A dedicated genealogist, she played a pivotal role as the general chairman for the Chickasaw County History Book project. An active member of the Jaycettes, a community service organization, Shirley shared her time and skills selflessly. She volunteered her sewing talents for many years, crafting uniforms and flags for the high school band and drum corps. Furthermore, she was a valued member of the Houston Band Boosters. Shirley’s dedication extended to her faith community; she was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Houston and sang in the choir for numerous years.
Services to celebrate Shirley’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at the Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Houston. The service will be officiated by Bro. Greg Simmons, Bro. Kenny Adams, and Bro. Cameron O’Daniel. Following the service, she will be laid to rest at Rose Hill Cemetery in Houlka. The arrangements are being handled by Memorial Funeral Home of Houston.
Shirley is survived by her three children: Melanie Munlin (Bart) of Houston, Leslie Mathis of Houston, and Sharon Taggart (Jimmy) of Moss Point. Her legacy also includes three grandchildren: Samantha Morgan (Taylor) of Round Rock, Texas; Mary Beth Arredondo (Adam) of Metairie, Louisiana; and Matthew Munlin (Caroline) of Kansas City, Missouri. Additionally, she leaves behind two great-grandsons: Joseph Munlin of Kansas City, Missouri, and Isaiah Arredondo of Metairie, Louisiana. Her sister, Carolyn Skelton of Houston, and several nieces and nephews also cherish her memory.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Herman Brandon Carroll and Pauline Sanders Carroll, as well as her sister Mary Kathryn Hardy, brother Bob Carroll, and her husband, Robin H. Mathis.
Pallbearers for Shirley’s final journey will be Jimmy Taggart, Bart Munlin, Sam Skelton, and Peter Wayne Hardy.
Those wishing to pay their respects may attend the visitation on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home in Houston.
