Mary Hazel Obituary, Death – Mary Hazel Ann Sterling, who was 96 years old, passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 in the High-Crest Nursing Home located in Springhill. Our hearts are broken as we share this news with you. She was the daughter of Peter White, who passed away, and Elizabeth (Melanson) White, who also passed away. She was born in Springhill. Hazel’s early career included working as a telephone operator, after which she launched her own hairdressing company. Additionally, she assisted her husband George in the operation of their Cumberland Firearms business.
Many of their clients will remember the bottles of preserves and other home-cooked delicacies that she would hand out to those clients. In addition to that, she was a member of the Wallace Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She may have forgotten many things as her memory deteriorated, but she never forgot the love that she had for both her own children and the children of George. Her second husband, George Sterling, her step-son David Sterling, her step-daughter Rose Sterling, her grandson Terry Canning, her siblings Henry Babineau, Alma McKay, and Louise Pettigrew, and her special niece Shirley Tabor all passed away before she did.
Shirley Tabor was her special niece. Her two children, as well as George’s children, all of her grandchildren, and a number of her nieces and nephews are the only ones who are left to grieve her departure. The A. H. Brown Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements and can be reached at 902-597-2361. The funeral home is located at 5 McFarlane Street in Springhill. Her cremation has already taken place, and there are no plans for memorial ceremonies at this time. This was her wish.
The family would like to express their most heartfelt thanks to Dr. Rondeau and the rest of the staff at High Crest Nursing Home for their remarkable compassion and care that they have provided over the years. Those who wish to honor her legacy with a financial contribution may do so to the St. Andrew’s Wesley United Church or to a charitable organization of the donor’s choosing. Visit the online memorial at www.brownsfuneralhome.com or the A H Brown Funeral Home Facebook Page to share your memories with the family or to offer your condolences. Both of these locations may be found on the funeral home’s website.
