Norma Shumate Obituary, Death – Norma Jean Shumate, 66, of Erie, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home surrounded by family at 12:20 p.m., Saturday, August 19, 2023. She was born on November 7, 1956 in Phillipsburg, KS and is preceded in death by her parents Bobby Eugene and Patsy Ann (Jones) Wise. Norma was raised in the military, and lived many places as a child including Germany. Settling in Eldorado, Kansas where she attended high school. Her senior year of high school she met her sweetheart and now husband,
Jeffrey Lee Shumate. They were married in Rosalia, Kansas on January 3, 1975. They had two children. Sonya and Travis. When the children were young they lived in Chattanooga, TN where she had worked as a respiratory therapist/EMT. In 1985 they relocated to Winfield, Kansas where they settled and raised the children. In 2000 they relocated to St Charles, MO where she worked as an accounts receivable/payable clerk for a pool company, until she retired. After Jeff retired, they made their home in Erie, KS where she became a member of First Christian Church.
She loved her family, being a grandmother and her dog Gus. You could often find her in the kitchen cooking and trying new recipes. She also loved to cross stitch, crochet and craft, read and travel with her husband in the RV when the opportunity arose. Survivors include a daughter, Sonya Miranda and her husband, Marcelo of Fort Smith, AR; six grandchildren, Ashley McPherson, Jeffrey McPherson, Rachel Riley, Aliyah Shumate, Taylor Shumate and Addyson Shumate; two great-grandchildren, Jaxton and Lily;
her step- mother, Glenna Wise of ElDorado, KS; one brother, Rusty Peyton of Galena, KS; three sisters, Connie Brown of ElDorado, KS, Donna Stareck of Potwin, KS and Lila Aitken and her husband, Keith of Caney, KS. She was preceded in death by a son, Travis Shumate who passed away in 2017. Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life gathering on Saturday September 9, 2023 at 12 pm at the First Christian Church, located at 703 W State St Erie, Ks 66733. Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home of Erie is in charge of arrangments.
