Eric Creed Motorcycle Accident, Death – Twenty percent of all Colorado traffic fatalities that year were motorcyclists, who accounted for 149 of the state’s total traffic fatalities that year. El Paso (25), Jefferson (19), Adams (12), Denver (12), and Arapahoe (11), among others, had the highest rates of deaths in the state. Now, Colorado State Troopers are sounding the alarm that another disturbing spike in deadly motorcycle accidents is afflicting the state. In order to keep correct lane position and control of their motorbike, motorcyclists are urged to reduce their speed, observe all applicable traffic laws, and always drive in a safe manner.
The Colorado State Patrol looked into 35 fatal motorcycle accidents involving 36 people between January 1 and July 31 of 2023. The Denver metropolitan region was hit the hardest, although northern Colorado and the Western Slope also had their fair share of deadly accidents. Researchers determined that the leading causes of these fatal accidents were excessive speed and lane infractions. In addition, speed was the leading secondary component in majority of these fatal collisions even though it was not mentioned as the primary cause.
“Our message today is for motorcycle riders to drive as if their life depends on it,” said Col. Matthew C. Packard, chief of the Colorado State Patrol. “We often worry about motorists not seeing or yielding to motorcycles,” he said. We recognize the heightened risk of riding, and we urge you to avoid taking any unnecessary chances that might end in your untimely demise or permanent disability. Crashing is a risk for cyclists of all skill levels.
The Colorado State Patrol found that the average age of motorcyclists killed in traffic accidents was 44. Staying out of the blind zones of other cars and riding at safe speeds can help motorcyclists avoid serious injuries or even death. Keep in mind that it is more challenging to respond safely and swiftly to risks while traveling at high speeds, especially on a motorbike.
Motorists should also be very cautious around motorcyclists and constantly check their blind areas. The state of Colorado and the Colorado State Patrol collaborate to provide motorcycle operators with access to beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels of training.
