James Lewis Death, Obituary – Unfortunately, legendary member Jim Lewis of the Seagulls passed away yesterday after a protracted struggle with dementia. At the end of the 2022 season, the Wynnum Manly Seagulls had its Presentation Gala, at which Lewis, Wally’s father, was presented with a Wynnum Manly Seagulls Life Membership. Since Wynnum Manly’s founding in 1951, Jim and Wally have been the only father-son duo to hold the position of coach at the organization.
In the year 1976, Jim Lewis, After coaching Wynnum Manly sides for the past 16 years, Lewis decided to call it quits at the end of the 1976 season and retire. He had a philosophy that all credit should be given to his team while speaking with the media, which made him very well liked by the players, and he was highly popular with the players. He possessed the unique ability to coax the very best performance out of his athletes.

From 1963 to 1967, Lewis coached the Seagulls U18 team. He then went on to lead the Seagulls Colts in 1969 and the Seagulls 3rd Grade team in 1972 to their first ever premierships. Additionally, he coached the reserve grade team that won the championship in 1975. After that, he brought his coaching career to a close by taking over the Seagulls first grade team in the year 1976.
